So, I already know what you’re thinking. Toss my cosmetics? Deanna, are you nuts? Trust me, I understand your plight. But my goal is to keep you safe and that means teaching you how to properly read and understand the labels on your beauty items. Doing so can help you make informed decisions that will impact your health in a positive way. When products exceed their expiration date, they can become runny or smelly. This can cause irritation, infections or other potential health issues for you later down the road. Is all of that worth saving $9.99 on a tube of mascara?
Knowing how to read your labels. On your beauty product labels, there’s a tiny image of a round jar with a small number written inside. If the image says 12M on it, that means it is best if used within twelve months of opening. After that it loses its efficacy and the elements may begin to separate and become runny or smelly. Pro tip: Some of your mascara packaging may suggest tossing after six months, but I suggest only using it for three, especially if you use it or share it on a regular basis. Doing so prevents product dry out and risks of spreading eye infections.
Knowing which products last longer. Products with a liquid consistency are playgrounds for bacterial growth. A few examples include liquid foundation, liquid eyeliner, and mascara. Since these products tend to expire quickest, be mindful of the date you opened it by marking the product with the expiration date or the date you opened it.
Powder-based products such as blush, eyeshadow, and powder foundation have a bit of a longer shelf life. Pro tip: Lightly mist your powder products with an alcohol 99 after each use to prevent bacterial growth between uses.
Lip products can range anywhere from nine to twelve months after first use, but you should consult the packaging to be sure. Remember to tag those puppies with a sticker to keep tabs on when to toss them. Pro tip: Lightly mist the tip of your lipstick or lip applicator with alcohol 99 after each use.
These tips also apply to all of your health and beauty items: lotion, skin care products, shampoos, and liquid soap.
On this journey to a healthier lifestyle, it’s important to keep your eyes open. Study your products for any funky signs of color inconsistencies, smells and textures that are off, or anything that makes you lift a brow. It’s better to be safe than sorry, so just toss and replace it. Take it from your clean beauty bestie, the health risk just isn’t worth it.
